These days,it seems quite common that schools arrange students as their academic abilities,and at the same time,there are many particular courses reserved for a certain group of students who have other abilities.Yet,there still remains some disagreement as to whether having students with different abilities together is better than grouping students in terms of academic performance or not.Before presenting my view,I intend to discuss both sides of the arguments.
Fist of all,in many cases,students benefit greatly from the method of selecting students according to their academic abilities.From our own study experience,we can find plenty of evidence to support the view that classifying students can positively help motivating their potentials.Ability grouping,actually,makes it possible that teachers can adopt different teaching materials and methods according to different groups .Therefore,children in those classes can receive more specific and useful guidance .Moreover,it is generally believe that selecting students who have similar abilities in one group is beneficial to students’psychological health .Specifically,it can not only prevent the students with highly academic level from being overconfident ,but also make the students with other abilities recognise their value.But at the same time,admittedly,separating students with academic and other abilities may broaden the gap between groups.But overall,I personally believe that the benefits of selecting students depends academic or other abilities far outweigh its drawbacks.
On the other hand,having students with different abilities study together is better to the generation of diversity.Let us imagine a class which consists of students those study well,those artistic genius and those individuals with specially athletic talents.To study in these kinds of classes,it seems that,students can mutually discussing,studying,and improving.But,we have to admit the fact is that our education authorities still select students mainly according to their academic abilities.Because with this kind of arrangement,students with high level of academic abilities can not focus on their studies and the others lack effective guidance .As a matter of fact,it seems only grouping (according to academic and other abilities) can compensate these drawbacks.
In conclusion,I agree that the overall effect of grouping mainly based on academic abilities is positive both in the aspects of knowledge acquisition and psychological development.
