Where’s the beef?
“Where’s the beef?” is a catch phrase in the United States and Canada.Since it was first used as an advertising slogan,it has become a phrase to question the substance of an idea,or event.
The phrase first came to public attention in the advertisement for the Wendy’s chain of hamburger restaurants (温迪汉堡快餐连锁店) in 1984.In the ad Fluffy Bun,a woman received a burger with a very large bun from a fictional competitor. The competitor used the slogan “Home of the Big Bun.” But seeing the tiny slice of beef, the old woman angrily shouted,“Where’s the beef?” Soon this catch phrase was repeated in television shows, films, and magazines.
There were also some sequels to the ad.For example, the old woman yelled at a Fluffy Bun manager over the phone,“Where’s the beef?” The advertising campaign ended in 1985 when the woman said,in another ad,that she had found the beef ...at Wendy’s!
The phrase became related with the 1984 U.S.presidential election (1984年美国总统竞选).During an election debate,a candidate laughed at his competitor by using the phrase. He said,“When I hear your new ideas,I’m reminded of that ad,‘Where’s the beef?’”
Now do you understand the meaning of this phrase and how to use it?Here’s another good example for you.
Our history teacher is a good talker but there isn’t much real meat about history in what he says.I’d like to ask him,“Where’s the beef?” Because we sure don’t learn much from him.
