Hi-I'm a carbon atom.RETLAW has insisted that I tell you about myself.I don't know why he made such a fuss about me,I've been in,and a part of his body,for decades.He thinks that I'm somewhat of interest.Probably because I am,well,somewhat,sort of a...well immortal.I don't know exactly what that means,exactly.
Maybe I should start with when and where I was 'born'.Well,I wasn't really 'born',as such.I just,sort of.came into existence.In a rather dramatic way.I was created in a supernova.You know,an exploding star.More than 6 billion of your years ago.I didn't realize that I had been created.Actually,I couldn't really tell anything about anything.What did I know:I was inside a big,sort of,crystal-and I couldn't 'see' anything.But,I do remember getting cold.And colder,and colder.Turns out,I had been created when a star blew up !And then I was swirling around in space.No aim,no control,no nothing.Just wandering around in 'space'.This 'space' was big,and after getting blown into it,the crystal that I was part of just moved in first a straight direction,then curving,then wandering in all directions.After a while,I began to get jostled around,and that went on for such a long time before things settled down.
Took a 'long' time,probably a billion of your years,but I began to feel warmer.Amazing !I actually got to 'see' something.Turns out that my crystal,and a gazillion others had come together and now we were turning.Now,I know that what had happened is that after the supernova,we had wandered until something (I think it is called gravity) made us start moving toward each other and that made us turn in circular motion and coalesce into a big round group of crystals,known as a 'planet'.Took a long time-probably millions of years.Then I found myself on the surface of that crystal and darned if I didn't float away after a while.I floated around,looking up and down-it was wonderful,the first time.But for some reason,I'd get to float,then get washed onto the ground,then back up.Round and round.
And I felt 'warm'--part of that supernova was now back together and making sunlight.A warm,bright,enjoyable star making me warm.Wonderful.And the warmth had gotten some of the other atoms moving and combining and changing from solid form to liquid and then evaporate-rise up and slide down.Swirling around,going up,meeting others,flowing together.Wonderful.But that all changed !I lost a couple of electrons (an outer shell of my atomic structure) and in order to survive,I had to latch onto another atom.Then a couple other electrons were lost and I had to grab onto another atom.These two guys were oxygen atoms and together,we three became a molecule of carbon dioxide.And again I was able to swirl around,flowing.This went on for,probably a billion years.Then I found myself floating into something...a green hole (a leaf).Then,in the dark I was stripped of those oxygen atoms and I got myself into a worse problem.I got attached to a bunch of other atoms.Really stuck.Shortly after,the whole bunch started to fall apart.Found myself on the ground,with bacteria all around and---EATING ME !Not good.But then another couple of oxygen atoms came along and joined with me and we sort of...rolled away.Got caught in another flow,probably water and swirled away.Then we got to float again.
This type of thing went on and on until I found myself enclosed in lots of green stuff.Geologically speaking,this was the Mississippian Period and the plant that I was part of was becoming part of coal.Yep,there I was tied up in coal.Got stuck there for about 90 million years.Ninety million years !That's how long it took to be turned into coal and find my way back to sunlight.But I finally made it.Then I could float and swirl again.Joining with oxygen atoms and being torn from them.Over and over.Once,when I had floated into a leaf and been stuck to other atoms,the whole plant got overtaken by a massive fire.Stuck to two oxygen atoms,again floating and swirling.Later,we got sucked into another leaf and this leaf got eaten by a very big animal.This was the Jurassic Period.The animal was a brontosaurus,I think.And I got bound up in its body for a several decades.I couldn't get out until the old boy died and rotted.Found myself being eaten by another bacteria.Again.You know,this type of thing can get tiresome:being part of a plant,then part of an animal,eaten by bacteria,then plant,then animal.Over and over.Over and over.Gradually,the animals got more complex and some animal were eaten by other animals.I've been part of an animals that fly and others that swam in a great ocean.And I swirled around in that ocean for decades...or centuries,I forget,maybe millenia.
Oh,I forgot,one of those times in a plant (or was it an animal?) I was in a pool so big and so deep I was stuck for millions of years.It was the Cretaceous Period.And I found myself in petroleum,far under the ground surface.But I found sunlight again and began to float off but got captured and found myself with a gazillion other carbon atoms鈥攁ll like me.Imagine,looking at myself in a mirror wherever I looked !But we all swirled around and around.I had been made into something you call gasoline.Pumped from one tank to another,finally into a dark tube and suddenly found myself being heated extremely hot and,guess what:two more oxygen atoms grab onto me.I had been burned in an automobile engine!Off as carbon dioxide,floating and swirling again.
I have been part of all kinds of plants and animals.And bound up in coal and oil.But I'm indestructible.And now I am bound up the muscle of RETLAW's right leg.I had been in the soil of a garden,where a worm had dropped me,when a carrot absorbed me.Someone pulled me out and couple days later,RETLAW ate me.Roamed around his body until a cell in his right leg latched hold of me.Can't get out.I'll be here a while.(Maybe until the old boy dies and rots !)
Well,that's my story.I am a carbon atom.When two oxygen atoms latch onto me we become a molecule of carbon dioxide.When I get into a plant,I get separated from the oxygen atoms,but become part of the plant,until it is eaten by some animal.I've been around this world thousands of times because I am indestructible.I've been part of the Great Barrier Reef,a Spanish ship sunk of the coast of Florida,part of several English kings,at least a thousand different kinds of trees and shrubs,I was even part of Albert Einstein,George Washington and Robert E.Lee.Now I am part of RETLAW and I won't be going anyway for a while.He is going to bed now,so goodbye.Live long and prosper.
