陆机少时,颇好游猎.在吴豪盛,客献快犬.名曰：“横耳”.机后仕洛,常将自随.此犬黠慧,能解人语.又尝借人三百里外,犬识路自还,一日到家.机羁旅京师,久无家问,因戏犬曰：“我家绝无书信,汝能赍书驰取消息不?”犬喜摇尾作声应之.机试为书,盛以竹筒,系之犬颈,犬出驿路,疾走向吴……径至机家,口衔筒作声示之.机家开筒取书,看毕,犬又向人作声,如有所求；其家作答书内筒,复系大颈,犬既得答,仍驰还洛.计人程五旬,而犬往还才半月.后犬死,殡之,遣送还葬机村,去机家二百步,聚土为坟.村人呼为黄耳冢.

陆机年轻的时候,很喜欢游玩打猎.他家是吴郡的豪门大族,门客献给他一只跑得很快的狗,名叫“黄耳”.陆机后来到洛阳做官,常把这只狗带在身边.这只狗非常机灵,能听懂人话.陆机曾把他借给住在三百里之外的某人,这条狗（居然）认识道路,自己跑了回来,只用一天时间便跑到家.陆机寄居在京城,很久没有家中的书信,于是对这只狗开玩笑说：“我家断绝了书信,你能不能带着我的书信跑回去取消息?”狗高兴地摇动尾巴,吠叫着表示应答.
陆机就试着写了一封信,用竹筒装着,系在狗的颈子上.狗走出家门在驿路上一路奔跑到吴地……径直到陆机的家,口衔竹筒叫着,要家人取看.陆机家人打开竹筒取出书信,看过之后,狗又向家人吠叫,好像要求家人回信.陆机家人就写了回信放置竹筒内,又系在狗的颈子上.狗得到回信之后,又从原路奔回洛阳.算计人的行程还要五十天,可是黄耳往返才用了半个月.后来狗死了,陆机就用棺木将它运回村中安葬,离陆家两百步,堆土作坟.村中的人都叫黄耳坟.
