he is a friend of my father 他是指我爸爸的一个朋友.
he is a friend of my father's 他是我爸爸朋友中的一个.
其实这个例子不能很好的解释出之间的区别.你可以看下这个例子；
this is a picture of my father 这是我爸爸的照片（照片上的人是爸爸）
this is a picture of my father's 这事我爸爸的一张照片（照片是属于我爸爸的,照片上的人可以是任何人）
