Earthquakes are among the most powerful events on earth,and their results were fairly destructive and terrifying.An earthquake is a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden breaking and shifting of large sections of Earth's rocky outer shell.According to a Xinhua
report,earthquakes have killed more people on the Chinese mainland than any other form of natural disaster such as floods and droughts.A big earthquake is a catastrophe.A severe earthquake can release energy 10,000 times as great as that of the first atomic bomb and
trigger landlides that cause great damage and loss of life.Large earthquakes beneath the ocean can create a series of huge,destructive waves called tsunamis that flood coasts for many miles.
By the geography we know that China is located in one of the most active seismic regions of the world and has been plagued by numerous destructive earthquakes during its long history.The most significant of these earthquakes,in terms of lives lost,was that which occurred in 1556.No other earthquake in this century has been as catastrophic or has claimed as many lives as the great earthquake that struck the city of Tangshan,in Northern China,on July 28,1976.Tangshan,a thriving industrial city with one million inhabitants,is located only about 95 miles east,and slightly south of Beijing,where only few of its structures are earthquake-resistant.
The earthquake halted almost all industrial production in the quake-hit areas and caused heavy losses.It's destructions are beyond calculation .Just as fatal disease can destroy our body and sometiomes even put an end to our lives,so does earthquake knok us down so hopelessly that we couldn't do anything to solve it.Earthquakes almost never kill people directly.Instead,many deaths and injures in earthquakes result from falling objects and the collapse of buildings,bridges,and other structures.As statistics shows that on average,a powerful earthquake occurs less than once every two years.At least 40 moderate earthquakes cause damage
somewhere in the world each year.About 40,000 to 50,000 small earthquakes——large enough to be felt but not damaging——occur annually.
May 12th is an ordinary day in 2008,it is the day that shocking and so destructive earthquake happened in Sichuan province,China.The earthquake destroyed nearly everything in Wenchan county and other places in Sichuan province.It was terrible.We can't describle the scene what we saw and the news what we heard with any words.Thousands of people were injured even died.And thousands of children became such unlucky ones who lost fathers or mothers they longed to have families to continue with.And even their little lives were crushed out of the most destructive and terrifying earthquake.So,there is no denying that earthquakes is the most destructive and terrifying natural disaster!
