There are health dangers from air pollution.Statistics show that air pollution in cities increases the risk of certain lung diseases such as emphysema,bronchitis and asthma.It can kill babies,old people and those who have respiratory diseases.In London,in 1952,four thousand people died in one week as a result of serious air pollution.In 1948,in the small town of Donora,Pennsylvania,twenty people died in a four-day period of bad air pollution.
Scientists have found out that chemicals in the polluted air can cause changes in our cells.These changes may cause babies to be born with serious defects.
Scientists also have learned that these chemicals we are apt to take into our bodies from air ,water and food act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work.In order to keep healthy and live longer,we must keep air pollution under control.
Air pollution can cause airplane and auto accidents because it cuts down visibility.It also has harmful effects on animals,plants and farm crops.It damages our works of art and dirties and corrodes our fine buildings.The cost of all this damage in the United States is thought to be more than $20 billion every year.This is far more than the money we need to control air pollution.So air pollution is not only a big threat to our health but it also costs us a tremendous amount of money.That is another reason why we must find every possible way to control air pollution.Though it is still difficult now to solve the problem of air pollution completely,we cannot afford to wait till we have all the answers.
