1.Introduction
In this thesis, the major concern is the roles of the children protagonists in Mark Twain's two Adventures, namely, the great significance of the two children characters,Tom and Huck,to the themes of the two novels. The first part is a literature review, sketching the author's life and experience that influenced his creation of the two novels and briefly introducing the social and literary background of the two books which had impact upon the themes of the two Adventures. The second part tries to explore the roles of the children protagonists in the themes of the two Adventures.Children's innocence contrasts sharply with adults' vice, through which Mark Twain threw strong criticism on the American society. Moreover, the view that the two children protagonists are the symbols of American people might seem rather assumptive, but it proves to be tenable with the presentation of some historical facts and analysis of the works in question. In the course of the reading, the readers can clearly sense that Mark Twain showed great concern for the universal human traits, especially rebellion and kindness, which are examined in this chapter as well.
