一般就用background,没必要讲technical background~
要讲某个方面的background,可以讲background in X-field.

Dear student,
We have a Research Masters scholarship for a project in which we study and develop bio-acoustic voice recognition system.
This is to start in January 2009.
You need to have background in pattern recognition or computer vision or signal processing,or other related subject disciplines.
