1）perpendicular 一般在使用时后面多数跟着介词 to,表达 "和XX" 垂直,或“构成直角”这样的描述.
例如：
The z-axis is perpendicular to the plane.（be perpendicular to ...句型）
It runs in a direction almost perpendicular to the east bank of the river.
2）vertical 这个词,用来形容“垂直的”相对于 horizontal用来形容“水平的”.一般都是直接加在名词之前,比如下面句子中物理学所说的“垂直加速度”、“水平加速度”
the acceleration in the vertical direction and the horizontal direction ...
3）portrait 相对于 landscape 一般是专指图像或照片列印（或摆放）的方式,垂直（直挂式,高度大于宽度）或水平（横卧式,宽度大于高度）,较少用于科学（数学、物理）上的陈述.而且这两个词除了在印刷专业外,较常用于名词词性.
4）plumb 这个词是由 plumb line 而生,就是在线绳的一段连接上像铅坠之类的重物,工程上通过悬挂用来测“垂直”的一种工具,也用于测水的深度.一般人不大用得到这个词.
