Lying 2.8 kilometers to the west of Hangzhou,or east of Solitary Hill (Gu Shan) at the western end of Baidi Causeway,’Autumn Moon on the Calm Lake’ is a park with water on three sides.
The park features the ’Autumn Moon on Calm Lake’ Pavilion,the Pavilion of Imperial Stele,the Octagonal Pavilion,the Quadrangular Pavilion,and the Hutianyibi (Lake and Sky Merged in Verdure) Tower.Artificial hillocks and imaginative rockery,exquisite bridges and smooth terraces as well as flowers and trees add to the scenery of this masterpiece of Chinese-style landscape architecture.
As the most ravishing sight around Solitary Hill,this place is a vantage point for viewing moonlit scenery.Near the Lake-viewing Pavilion built in the Tang Dynasty more than l,000 years ago,a pavilion for storing imperial books was put up in 1699,during the reign of the Qing Emperor Kangxi.In front of the latter,an open-air terrace jutting into the lake almost at the same level as the lake surface has the name ’Autumn Moon on Calm Lake’.It is a delight to view West Lake from here,particularly on a full-moon autumn night.
