World Expo to help China, world overcome crisis
The 2010 World Expo to be held in Shanghai can help China and the world ride through the global financial crisis (全球金融危机),said a Chinese political advisor.
“We hope that the Shanghai World Expo will be a precious opportunity to help China overcome economic difficulties, and lift the world out of the crisis shadow,”said Zhao Qizheng, head of the Committee for Foreign Affairs (外事委员会主任),a working organ (工作机构) of the National Committee of the CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference,中国政治协商会议委员会).
Zhao cited the example of the 1933 World Expo in the US city of Chicago, which attracted nearly 23 million people, and created about 100,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
The Chicago World Expo greatly boosted people’s courage and confidence in fighting the Great Depression*,said Zhao in a speech to the annual session (年会) of the CPPCC National Committee.
At the same time,Wan Jifei, vice director of the Shanghai World Expo Executive Committee (上海世博会组委会副主任委员),pledged that the financial crisis would not affect the overall success of the Expo at a press conference.
“I think all the participating countries are willing to use the Shanghai Expo as an opportunity to boost their national images,”Wan said.“China is willing to offer assistance to help them cut costs and increase efficiencies.”
Zhou Hanmin, another vice director of the Executive Committee, said they have set up a special fund of 100 million U.S.dollars to facilitate the participation of developing countries.
“The Expo would at least make both ends meet,if it can not make profit,”Zhou said.“It will also boost the country’s confidence which is key to combating the global financial crisis.”
