Why is learning business English important in China?>>
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The topic today, is the importance of learning Business English in China. >>
To start with, I’d like to tell you a report conducted by McKinsey Global Institute known for its in-depth research on global economic issues. The title of the report is “Addressing China’s Looming Talent Shortage” in which the researchers suggested that despite China's enormous pool of university graduates (3.1 million in 2005 alone), fewer than 10 percent of Chinese job candidates, on average, would be suitable for working in foreign companies and domestic companies with global ambitions. We may be puzzled by such a paradox of shortages amid plenty. The reason for this, somewhat understandable, is the job candidates’ poor English, especially in the fields of finance, accounting, quantitative analysis(?这个和列举的不是一类), and international trade negotiation.>>
So, does English really play such a crucial role in contemporary world? We may find the answer from the following figures. Worldwide, over 1.4 billion people live in countries where English enjoys official status; one fifth of the world population speaks English with varying degrees of competence; over 70% of the world’s scientists read English; about 85% of the world’s mails are written in English; and 80% of all information in the world’s electronic retrieval system is stored in English. By 2010, the number of people who speak English as a second or foreign language will exceed the number of the native speakers. See, English has already become a global language, no matter whether you are willing to admit it or not. It is the universal language that has been recognized by whole world and penetrated into all sides of our life. Therefore, as long as we desire to join the world, we have to have a good command of English.
As international business activities have increased greatly over the years, Business English has boomed and flourished as the accepted medium for international business transactions. Therefore, for China, learning Business English is becoming more and more important in terms of development both nationally and individually.>>
First of all, learning Business English will provide China with a good communication vehicle and will definitely benefit China’s sustainable development. As today’s world is in its way of becoming a global village, communication and intercourse among countries have reached the highest level than ever before. As to clear communication, a preference of clear, logical and concise communication is always welcome, simply because information exchanged with business transactions has to be conveyed with minimum risk of misunderstanding. As a result, a universal language is naturally needed. It will provide a common platform on which we can communicate and have mutual understanding of each other in as short time as possible. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean the language is the only language that can be used. You can speak any other language instead as you wish. You can use hand language (gestures) and even bark(like dog). Yes, it can demonstrate your versatility, but can most of us understand it? Apparently not. We need one more interpreter under such circumstance. So, it makes no sense in the business world since it can only increase transaction cost and reduce efficiency. It also has nothing to do with sovereign dignity or any other political matters. The universal language is just established by usage for its more widespread application than other languages. On the other hand, speaking English while doing business with foreign countries, will boost China to inoculate into the whole world. It is normally true that you are more likely to accept a new-comer who can understand and speak your language rather than keeps his own and needs a translator when talking with you. You will just regard him as a friend and be more willing to get along with him. The same is true of China when it is in need of world’s recognition and plans to make closer connection with other countries. Only if we gain recognition and friendliness of others can we make best use of both internal and external resources and therefore achieve the goal of sustainable development.>>
Next, learning Business English will greatly enhance the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises. On one hand, with good command of Business English, the negotiation ability of an enterprise will intensify. As China’s entry to WTO and more domestic companies expand abroad, more and more international trade conflicts happened to domestic companies. Chinese leather shoes were imposed anti-dumping tax in Europe, Chinese televisions have encountered the same fortune in the United States, and many of our enterprises have being making acquires of foreign companies which have also come up against intervention of foreign governments. Good negotiation capability, which is partly from good understanding of Business English, is consequently needed in all these situations. Good understanding of Business English involves not only the verbal language but also awareness of cultural differences, which play a great part in negotiation. Sensitivity to cultural differences is essentially necessary for a successful negotiation when considering whether to choose direct or indirect tactics. Therefore, learning Business English is of great significance for success in international negotiation. On the other hand, an enterprise without any stumbling block in English can join the world market with more ease. In this case, a translator will not be needed anymore in the international transaction; the two parties can communicate directly. Concerning this point, we all understand a word that says two’s company, but three’s a crowd. And it is equally the same in the business connection. We all prefer speaking to a person who can have a direct interpersonal communication with us. We all prefer doing most things in shortest time. We all prefer achieving our goal at minimum cost including time and money. Now that business with an interpreter will last a longer time and cause a larger cost, we all would rather choose the business partner who has no problem in speaking English by himself. What’s more, an interpreter with English background only will sometimes make silly mistakes, since there are a large amount of English words which have different meanings in ordinary settings and in business settings and there are also many terms that seem to sound weird have specific meanings. Let me give you an example, crown jewels, what came to your mind at the first thought when you heard this term? An invaluable treasury? The crown of British Queen’s? Totally wrong. It is in fact a jargon used in corporate takeovers, which represents a firm’s major assets that the firm will sell when facing a takeover threat. You see, if the interpreter doesn’t have an economic background, he will not think up its real meaning no matter how imaginative he is and you will probably lose the deal.>>
Last but not least, learning Business English will make job candidates more competitive in the job market. As the mentioned report suggested, China is faced with a serious talent crunch that less than 10 percent of Chinese graduates will be fit for world-class multinationals. And the most pressing issue for job hunters is their poor English. We can have an overview about employment situation of Chinese graduates and Indian graduates that each year hundreds of Indian graduates enjoy the opportunity of going into investment banks but to Chinese graduates, such opportunity is too scarce. It is not because of their poor professional techniques but their poor application of English. Therefore, if you have fantastic English as well as excellent professional knowledge, it will no doubt strengthen your competitiveness against your rivals. Foreign enterprises that long for market share in China are in exigent need of comprehensive talents with proficient English as well as good understanding of Chinese market to improve their marketing , to understand consumer tastes, to develop customer service and to raise their local financial and accounting standards. In addition, domestic companies with global ambitions also need talents with perfect English background to help them enter into the global market and win the international competition.>>
To draw a conclusion, learning Business English is vitally significant to China that desires for closer link to whole world. It is not to ask us to desert our traditional language, but to learn one more useful skill that will substantially benefit ourselves. We can have a vision that one day, more Chinese graduates will become one of the members in the world-class multinationals; that one day, more Chinese enterprises will have a direct negotiation with their foreign parties; that one day, the global world will be surprised at China’s great progress in English command; that one day, China will be no longer regarded as a nation short of generalists concerning communication style and cultural fit. We are looking forward to that forthcoming day on which we will have sufficient confidence to announce that our country is in full storage of comprehensive talents with both English ability and technical skills. So, boys and girls, let’s take our own initiative and make more efforts in learning Business English to realize our dream.>>
