2 Key Advances and Supporting Methodology
The commercial objectives were to develop a rapid laminating method for the production of die casting tools and to offer a cost advantage over prototype and production tooling of 50 and 40% respectively, and furthermore,to reduce cycle times for die-casting by up to 50%.This has been achieved by addressing the seven key tasks:
1.Lamination material evaluation and down-selection,and lamination cutting method evaluation.
2.Evaluation and down-selection of lamination bonding method.
3.Investigation of the effect of the lamination concept on tool design-for-manufacture.
4.Evaluation and down-selection of tool finishing techniques.
5.Evaluation of cooling channel design and its effect on cooling efficiency.
6.Development of a robust cost and time model for laminated tool manufacture.
7.Test tool manufacture and evaluation.
2.1 Materials:The objective of this task was i) to down-select candidate materials suitable for the sheet laminating process,ii) to identify the optimal laser cutting conditions for profile cutting from sheet material, iii) to evaluate the thermal fatigue of the materials, especially their wear and hot cracking properties, and iv) to identify the optimal heat – treatment parameters of a bonded structure to achieve the desired tool hardness.
