其实这两句都是并列句．判断简单句和并列句的标准是看在同一句中有几个主语或谓语．只有一个主语和谓语是简单句,有两个或以上就是并列句或复合句.用并列连词（and,but,so ,therefore,
otherwise,however,or等）连接的句子是并列句,两个句子彼此不做句子成分,分别是完整的单句.He gets into the lift and goes up to the twelfth floor有两个主语（后一个相同可以省略）和两个谓语（gets,goes）.
这是简单句He gets into the lift to go up to the twelfth floor或者Getting into the lift ,he goes up to the twelfth floor.
这样就是复合句了After he gets into the lift ,he goes up to the twelfth floor.有了连词after,when,whether等引导一个句子,并且在另一个句中担任句子成分就是复合句了．,如做主语是主语从句,做宾语就是宾语从句,上面的after,when做时间状语从句.
