I was nearly thirteen years old when mother announced to me ,one August morning ,the arrival of Aunt Judith .The latter was a more or less enigmatic person whom we almost never saw ,for the reason that she lived at a great distance from us ,in Washington .I knew that she had had a very unhappy life and that ,for some unexplained reason ,she had not been able to marry .I was not fond of her .Her fixed stare made me lower my eyes ,and she had a good gloomy manner which i did not like.
