Some people who are against fairy tales say that they harm the child by frightening him.As to fears,there are,I think,wellproved examples of children being dangerously frightened by some fairy tales.Often,however,this comes from the child having been told the story only once.If a child is familiar with the story by repeating it,the pain of fear will be turned into the pleasure of a fear.
There are also people who are against fairy tales on the ground that they are not at all true,that genies( 妖怪 ) ,two-headed dragons ( 龙) and so on ,do not exist; and that instead of spending his time reading fairy tales,the child should be taught how to face the reality (现实) by studying history and science.I find such people,I must say,so strange that I don't know how to reason with them.If their ideas were sound,the world should be full of mad men trying to fly from New York to Paris on a broom or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their girl friends.
No fairy tales ever declares to be a description ( 描述) of our living world and no normal child has ever believed that it was true.
