Furthermore, the multiple regression analyses results also supported our hypothesis that
the aspects of identity firmness as a whole have stronger predictability for adolescent
psychological and social relationships domains than other domains in the WHOQOLBREF.
In other words, adolescent identity firmness may mainly contribute to their psychological
and social satisfaction. This result implied that adolescents with a better sense
of sameness and continuity of self-identity not only would help them with direction,
purpose, and meaning life, but also experience better subjective well-being in psychological
and social living.Surprisingly, the multiple regression analyses results found that
the aspects of identity firmness altogether have the maximum explained variance in predicting
environmental item of HRQOL VAS.Berzonsky and Neimeyer (1994) emphasized
that a person’s developing identity is a feature of the individuals that result from past, and
contribute to future,person-context relations. As such, identity is an instrument of selfregulation.
Regulation of one’s relations with the context involves construing how the
context (e.g.the crowd of peers in one’s high school) may be adapted or modified (e.g.
through choosing a subset of peers with whom to form a clique) in order to fit or meet one’s
goals (e.g.the attainment of friendship or popularity). For this reason,it might explain why
the aspects of identity firmness could have more predictability for environmental item of
HRQOL VAS.An alternative reason is based on the characteristics of measuring adolescent
HRQOL.In the study, there are two parts to measure adolescent HRQOL.One is
WHOQOL-BREF,which is based on item-based.The other is HRQOL VAS,which is
based on global evaluation of participant’s satisfaction. When Adolescent participants
responded to the environmental item of HRQOL VAS (i.e.‘‘In general, how satisfied are
you with environmental status?’’),their response might be taken many contextual factors
(e.g.school environment,home environment,peer relations,community resources…etc.)
into considerations beyond the environmental domain of WHOQOL-BREF.
