The interfacial adhesion of CF reinforced polymer
composite is poor because CF has chemically inert and
smooth surface, and the oxygen containing functional
groups are very few.Much research has been conducted
to enhance the adhesion between CF and polymer so
that it is well known that the surfaces of CFs can be
modified by surface treatments. The majority of such
efforts were concentrated on increasing fibre–matrix
adhesion through the use of surface treatments.7,8
In this study, the authors aimed to produce SCF
reinforced ABS materials by twin screw extrusion to
observe the effects of the fibre surface modification
effect on the mechanical and morphological properties
of injection moulded composites. The authors also
focused on the effects of incorporating polar groups by
blending ABS with polyamide 6 (PA6) to functionalise
the polymeric matrix that was reinforced with SCFs and
to observe the effects of improved interfacial adhesion
between the fibres and the polymer matrix.
