  元宵节 Lantern Festival
  唐代奉道教为“国教”,而“上元”有是道教中天官紫微大帝的诞辰日,“上元”与“放灯”结合,逐渐演变为民间盛大的元宵佳节.
  古人将正月十五日称之为“上元”,是夜称“元宵”.元宵节起源于远古时代人们以火把驱邪的仪式.元宵节的风俗特征是通宵张灯结彩,供人观赏取乐,故又称“灯节”.各处有灯会,比赛花灯,举行灯谜盛会,小孩也提着灯笼四处游观玩耍.这种欢乐的场景,一直要持续到十八日“落灯”方止.此外,元宵节还时兴跑旱船、舞龙灯、耍狮子等等群众性娱乐活动,舞龙灯、耍狮子带有除祭田祖、祈甘雨的含义,舞龙则处于祈生育和祛病强身的期盼.

On t6he Lantern Festival , people decorate houses and streets with various lantern and red streamers for watch and amusement, hence it derives the name "Lantern Festival".Everywhere is lantern display and lantern-riddle guessing. Children are particularly cheerful and waking about for fun, carrying lanterns for illumination. This scene of great joy lasts till 18th "Taking Down Lantern". Besides, there are many popular public entertainments such as land-boat dance, dragon-lantern dance and lion dance, implying worship to the god of land and pray for rain, cures and fertility.
  The Tang Dynasty esteemed Taoism as "state religion"."Shangyuan"was the birthday of the God of Heaven, the Grand Emperor Zi Wei. With passage of time,"Shangyuan " and "burning lamp" (a ceremony of offering sacrifice to the dead and spirits) are combined together and developed into the grand Lantern Festival.
  清明节 Pure Brightness Festival
  清明节有大量纯属游乐的风习,如古代特有,今不复见的射柳、蹴鞠等,以及从古代一直延续至今的拔河、放风筝、荡秋千等.
  每年公历四月五日前后,是中国人的清明节.历史上,寒食禁火,祭奠先人,就早已蔚为习俗.唐朝之后,寒食节逐渐与清明节合流.清明时节,人们上坟扫墓祭祖,以寄托对先人的怀念.踏青本是清明扫墓的伴生活动.人们在扫墓之余,趁便在山间乡野游乐一番,也叫春游,古时叫探春、寻春.清明节还有插柳植树的风习,据说是纪念“教民稼穑”的神农氏;另一个是介子推死时所抱的柳树后来复活,晋文公赐名为清明柳,并折柳成圈戴在头上,此俗后传入民间,纪念春的复活.
  Pure Brightness Festival falls on around April 5th every year. It is already a very common custom to cook without fire and eat cold food only on Cold Food Festival (the day before Pure Brightness Festival ) to worship ancestors. After the Tang Dynasty Cold Festival was gradually merging with Pure Brightness Festival.
  On that very day, people sweep the graves and offer sacrifices and worship the passed ancestors. Taqing (Spring outing) is an accompanying activity of grave sweeping. On the way home, people happily wandering around farms and through mountains. Hence it derives the name, spring outing. In ancient times, it is also know as "Tachun","Xunchun" (enjoying spring).In addition, planting willow cutting is part of the custom, which is said to commemorate Shennong, the Holy Farmer, who taught our ancestor how to commemorate the reviving of the willow hugged by Jie Zitui before death (a faithful minister of King Wengong of JIn State who once saved King Wengong). Henceforth, King Wengong bestowed a name upon the willow "Qingming"(Pure Brightness) and he made a willow wicker with some twigs and wore an the head.Later this custom was spread among ordinary people to commemorate the return of spring. Besides the above-mentioned activities, there are also many other enterments such as shooting willow with arrows, kicking balls, tug of war , flying kites and swing all prevailing to this day.
  端午节 Dragon Boat Festival
  传说,战国时,楚国大夫屈原遭到坏人的谗言,被国君流放,于五月初五自投汨罗江.楚人哀之,以竹筒储米投水,划舟楫于江上营救.后来前者演变为裹食粽子;后者演变成龙舟竞渡.
  农历五月初五是中国传统的端午节,也称端阳、重五、中元五、沐兰节等.有关端午节的起源,说法不一,有“恶日”说、源自夏至节说、源自“地腊”说等.还有人认为是古代五月民族图腾——“龙”的活动日,每年这一天都要举行一次盛大的图腾祭,即将各种食物用树叶包裹,扔进水里,并在急鼓声中划着刻画成龙形的独木舟在哦水面上竞渡.后来此项活动演变为龙舟赛.从汉朝末年起,端午节逐渐有原始的崇拜、禁忌演变为祭奠有关的历史人物.其中流传最广、最富影响力的是纪念大文学家、爱国诗人屈原.南北朝统一之后,中国的南北节俗趋向统一,端午节祭奠屈原便由楚地而远播全国.
  The fifth day of the fifth lunar month is observed as a traditional Chinese festival, also called "Duanyang""Chongwu""Zhongyuanwu Festival", "Mulan Festival". It has different versions of the origin Solstice and from the grand once-a year ceremony of the Wu and Yue nationalities worshipping their totem-dragon. On the day, wrapped in leaves and paddled dragon shaped canoe in time with varied drum beat racing. Which later on developed into dragon boat racing. Since late Han Dynasty, this festival altered from primitive worship and taboo to paying worship and respect to the most influential historical character Qu Yuan. After the unification of the Southern and Nprthern Dynasties, the festival tended to be unified too. So the Dragon Boat Festival was spread from Chu to the whole country.
  Quyuan was at once a patriotic poet and senior official in Chu , one of the Warring State into which China was divided during the Eastern Zhou period. Unfortunately slandered ,he was forced to excile and took his own life by jumping into Miluo River. People of Chu were overwhelmed with sorrow at this sad news and threw rice packed in bamboo into river and drove boat to rescue Qu Yuan. These respectively developed into today's custom of eating Zongzi and dragon-boat racing.
