The Five Generic Comepetitive Strategies
A company's competitive strategy deals exclusively with its plans for competing successfully-its specific efforts to please customers, its offensive and defensive moves to counter the maneuvers of rivals, its responses to whatever market position. Companies the world over are imaginative in conceiving ompetitive strategies to win customer favor. At most companies the aim,quite simply, is to do a significantly better job than rivals of providing what buyers are looking for and thereby secure a market edge over rivals. Winning in the marketplace is nearly always a result of actions to seek and secure a sustainable competitive advabtage, but they all involve giving buyers what they perceive as superior value-a good product at a low price; a superior product that is worth paying more for; or a best-value offering that represents an attractive combination of price, features, quality, service, and other appealing attributes. Delivering superior value-whatever form it takes-nearly always requires performing value chain activities differently than rivals and building competencies and resource capabilities that are not readily matched.
Because each company's strategic approach consists partly of custom-designed actions to fit tis own circumstances and industry environment, there are countless variations in the competitive strategies that companies employ. Strictly speaking, there are as many competitive strategies as there are companies; the chances are indeed remote that any two companies-even companies in the same industry-will employ strategies that are exactly alike every detail. However, when one strips away the details to get at the real substance, the biggest and most important differences among competitive strategies boil down to (1) whether a company's market target is broad or narrow, and (2) whether the company is persuing a competitive advantage linked to low costs or product differentiation. Five distinct competitive strategy approaches stand out:
1. Alow-cost provider strategy-appealing to a broad spectrum of customers by being the overall low-cost provider of a product or service.
2. A broad differentiation strategy-seeking to differentiate the company's product/service offering from rivals' in ways that will appeal to a broad spectrum of buyers.
3. A best-cost provider strategy-giving customers mor value for the money by incorporating good-to-excellent product attributes at a lower cost than revals; the target is to have the lowest (best) costs and prices compared to rivals offering products with compareble attributes.
4. A focused(or market niche)strategy based on lower cost-concentrating on a narrow buyer segment and outcompeting rivals by serving niche menbers at a lower cost than rivals.
