Several authors have investigated hydrology and percolate
production at landfills. These studies, however, have in general
been conducted at landfill sites without any lateral variation
in hydrologic conditions; for example, they were conducted
for landfills in which all sections were in the same
state, for single landfill sections or for single waste cells. Most
of the studies have been conducted at closed landfills where
the hydrological conditions of all landfill sections are the same.
Examples of studies conducted previously are Al-Yaqout &
Hamoda (2003) who studied water balances and percolate
production at a mixed waste landfill in Kuwait,Poulsen et al.
(2002) who studied leachate production at a Danish municipal
landfill,Yuen et al.(2001) who compared leachate production
at dry and wet waste cells at a municipal landfill near
Melbourne,Australia,Dho et al.(2000) who modelled the
leachate level within the Kimpo landfill,South Korea,Johnson
et al.(1998,1999,2001) who studied leachate production
and composition at an incinerator ash landfill at Losdorf,
Switzerland,Fatta et al.(1999) who studied leachate production
and composition at Ano Liosia landfill,Greece,Lee et al.
(1997) who studied percolate production at the Nanjido
mixed waste landfill,South Korea,Reitzel et al.(1991) who
used literature data from eight landfills (including US and Canadian landfills) to characterize leachate production and
composition and Ehrig (1981) who presented leachate quality
and quantity from 20 German landfills. To the knowledge
of the authors there have been no studies, including those
mentioned above, investigating cases where lateral and temporal
variations in landfill hydrology occurred.
The objective of this study was therefore to investigate the
effects of both lateral and temporal changes in landfill operation
state and hydrology on percolate production as a function
of time and precipitation.Percolate production data from
Rærup landfill near the city of Aalborg in northern Denmark,
a full-scale landfill in operation are used in combination
with hydrological modelling.Impacts on percolate production
caused by placement of top cover and the planting of
top cover with trees will be evaluated.
