E very dog has his day but recently520dogs had theirs when they were rescuedon their way to a slaughterhouse.The
whimpering dogs were spotted by an ea－gle-eyed driver on a Beijing highway who swerved in front of the truck stopping its progress.This Good Samaritan then alerted others and soon several hundred volunteers sur－rounded the truck,demanding the dogs’re－lease.After a15hour stand-off the dogs’re－lease was eventually negotiated for100,000yuan.The dog’s trip had been very tough.Al－most all of them had suffered external injuries and many were dehydrated and sick.One dog had even died on the journey!
The action of these dog rescuers has caused a lot of debate.Some have argued that the de－votion of time and such huge resources is ridiculous and is better spent on disaster relief and helping people in trouble.However such things should not be seen as in competition.Any event that shows people being involved in social affairs raises social awareness generally and makes us examine ways we too can help those in need,whether they are people or animals.
Additionally,this action shows the rising awareness of animal rights.We do not own the planet.We share it with animals and their rights need to be respected.The rescue of the dogs demonstrates that people are now beginning to recognize that dog’s lives deserve our respect.Showing greater respect to animals goes in part－nership,not competition,with human social progress.
Some people have argued that if we eat the meat of animals why be selective and not eat the meat of dogs.However for many people dogs are more than just an animal.Often they are more than just a pet,they are a member of the family.
Let’s put a bit of balance into our relation－ship with dogs.At the moment a dog is a man’s best friend,but let’s also be a dog’s best friend.
