一、围院的平面空间
众所周知,外国建筑是院在外,即院子包围房子,中国建筑则相反,院在内而房在外,即房屋包围院子.房屋、墙垣等围合成院落,以院为中心；或是以主单元（即正殿、正厅）为中心,次单元（即两厢）围绕主单元,一正两厢,并以抄手廊连接,组成一座建筑.如在各地民居中的四合院空间.其特点就在于把“院子”作为建筑平面的组成部分,室内外空间融为一体,以房廊作为过度空间,富有生活气息.院周围建筑互不独立,相互联系.但合院建筑不是群体,而只是“一座”建筑.
从四合院住宅到万里长城虽然空间层次不同,但都属于一样的空间形态——即内向的外封闭的空间形态,共同体现或服务于一个社会系统.国,古为城的广称,即政治机构、军事实力及绝大部分的民众生息,都在一城之中.城外是自然广川,可以村居结庐,造别业,但它不是独立的.从东周起,一城一国或数城一国模式,一直到秦统一中国,仍以城池为“国”,数“国”合为大统一的国家.国中有家,故称国家.但家的空间模式与国相同,只是范围缩小了,可以这样说家是国的单元或细胞,或者说家是国的缩微,国是家的扩大.长城原为御敌戌疆而设,但从某种意义上说,长城就好比“国”这个大空间的围墙.无论是历朝都城,宫廷、园林和寺、庙、祠、观,还是各地的民居及市肆都以这种围院空间布局为特点.
这种内向层次型的建筑空间模式,尤以传统园林为最.它不但是形式的,而且更是意境的.园林之中,四周有廊、亭、轩、厅等建筑或粉墙,院在内,以树木、假山、池水、墙垣或建筑分割空间.“庭院深深深几许”,令人心旷神怡
