English 是主语,is 是谓语,a language 是宾语.spoken all around the world 是定语,英语中定语如果较长一般都放在所修饰的词后面.
其实这里就是省略了a language which is spoken all around the world 中的 “which is”.
英语里面经常用动词的过去分词形式作为定语放在后面修饰前面的词.因为英语是被人说,而不会自己说.是 be spoken by people.所以是用被动形式的spoken来修饰,而不能用speaking来修饰.类似的用法还有“the lion killed by the hunter”,“a name used by many people”,“a song known by many people”,意思分别是“被猎人杀死的狮子”,“许多人使用的一个名字”,“很多人都知道的一首歌”.都是用被动形式“killed”“used”“known”来修饰前面的词.因为狮子是被杀死,名字是被使用,歌曲是被人知道.
相反,如果被修饰的词和修饰的词是主动关系关系,那么就用ing形式修饰.比如“the man lying on the floor”,“the man driving the car”,“the boy playing on the road”,意思分别是“躺在地板上的男人”,“开车的男人”,“在路上玩耍的男孩”.因为男人和男孩是这些动作的执行者,是处于主动状态的,而不是被动状态的.所以用ing形式来修饰.
英语的语言习惯和中文有很多差别,中文中定语再长都是放在所修饰的词前面,而英语刚好相反.中文这个句子意思就是“英语是一门全世界广泛使用的语言”.“全世界广泛使用的”和“spoken all around the world”相对应,都是定语,但是中文里“全世界广泛使用的”放在“语言”前面,而英语里“spoken all around the world”就放在了“language”后面.所以这是中英文语言习惯的差别.
