College gives the first taste of freedom
A HAZY fog of smoke blurs the view on drug culture and drug use in the UK.Inside this fog,politicians and experts stumble over their views,while users are clear and coherent about what they enjoy and why.
And,in the middle of the fog – students,and lots of them.According to the Home Office,about 30 percent of the British population have used illegal drugs.The majority are between the ages of 16 and 24.For many UK students,university is their first time away from home and where they get the first taste of freedom.But it comes with pressure:the need to socialize,the need to work and the need to be cool.
These needs have created the perfect hole in popular culture to allow relaxing drugs in.The little plastic bags are especially associated with that other relaxing pastime – music.
I like songs,but only listening to songs.I can’t even sing a song correctly!When I sang a song before,my voice is such a noise - like those by the wild cats.But once,my teacher asked us to hold a Competition on English Songs -–everyone has to sing.It’s too hard for me.But as a monitor,I have to try.
Although I only sang “Happy Birthday” at the first competition,I kept practicing singing during night and day – in all free time and everywhere:besides classes,when I was taking a shower; when I was walking; even when I was in the bed!During that time,you could see me singing songs every time,everywhere.I have never been as crazy as that.Just like “No pains,no gains”,I succeeded.When I sang “Lemon Tree” in front of my classmates,I felt contented with their surprise and acclaim,my first taste is also my pride.
