Acient Chinese always made friends by weiqi.In acient China,the nobility 's talents were primarily compared with regard to four items:guqin,weiqi,calligraphy,Chinese painting.Thus,with weiqi as a required course for the nobility,people who were accomplished in weiqi were generally respected.

They indeed have time to emphasize the wrong translation "go chess" for "weiqi",leaving none to actually develope weiqi.In contrast,Japanese value weiqi so much that when the weiqi athlete Tengzexiuxing passed away, Japanese government even flied half-mast to express their grief.
