Beakeland's major contribution to the field is not so much the actual discovery of the material to witch he gave his name, but rather the method by which a reaction between penol and formaldehyde could be controlled.
Beakeland's major contribution to the field is not so much(that)(我认为这里是省略了that,)
the actual discovery of the material to which he gave his name
=He gave his name to the material of the actual discovery
but rather
the method by which a reaction between phenol and formaldehyde could be controlled
=The reaction between phenol and formaldehyde could be controlled by a method.

Beakeland's contribution is not the actual discovery ,but rather the method.
he made a actual discovery of the material then he gave his name to it
he found a method, and it can be used to control reaction between phenol and formaldehyde.
