由desert的发音想到的英文多音词

作为 Larry《新概念英语》口语二班学员,周一上课,我们学到了二十九课《taxi!》,这一课中有一个deserted car park,意思是废弃的停车场,Larry正巧让我做句子,“一次他停泊在沙漠里”,沙漠的英文是desert,我受这个deserted car park影响发错了,Larry给予了纠正.以下是老师的纠正及给我们的例句.
★desert
当读/di`z:t/时（v.）,意为"离开；放弃；背弃".当读
/`dezt/时(n.),意为"沙漠".
He deserted his wife and children and went
abroad.他置妻子与孩子不顾,出国去了.
Deserts are very dry regions with little
rainfall.沙漠为干旱少雨的地区.
此外,我还注意到,和沙漠发音相同的,还有一个单词,dessert,即a kind of sweet food after dinner. 甜点.而后,Larry又举了几个相关的例子,有insult,“侮辱”,当名词和动词时,便有不同的重读音节.课后,在复习时,让我想到了一些其他的有趣的英文多音词.
★elaborate
当读/i`lbrt/时(a.),意为"复杂的；精心制作的",如an elaborate
design精心设计；当读/i`lbreit/时（v.）,意为"详尽阐述；发挥；作详细说明".如elaborate
one's proposal详尽阐述自己的建议.
★live
当读/laiv/时(a.),意为"活的,有生命的",如live
fish活鱼；当读/liv/时（v.）,意为"住,居住；生活,过活,生存".
Only a few live trees were left after the fire.
火灾之后只剩下几棵树木还活着.
They lived through all the difficulties, and at
last, they got married.他们经历了各种困难,最终结婚了.
这个词,我还专门写过一篇《pplive是拉爱伍还是累伍》的文章.
★minute
当读/`minit/时(n.),意为"分,分钟；一会儿,片刻"；当读/mai`nju:t/时（a.）,意为"微细的,微小的；详细的".
It's only several minutes from here to the
cinema.从这到电影院只有几分钟路程.
Living things consist of minute structures
called cells.生物包括象细胞这样极微小的结构.
★present
当读/`preznt/时（n.）,意为"目前,现在",（a.）意为"出席的,在场的；目前的,现在的"；当读/pri`zent/时(v.),意为"赠送,给；提出,呈递,出示,介绍,引见".
I don't want to get married at present.我目前不想结婚.
It's unfair to discuss his case if he is not
present.他不在时讨论他的案件是不公平的.
Allow me to present my brother to you.
请允许我把我弟弟介绍给你.
★record
当读/`rek:d/时(n.),意为"唱片；记录,记载；最高记录；经历,履历"；当读/ri`k:d/时(v.),意为"记载,记录".
That airline has a bad record. 那条航线历来办得不好.
The marks record the height of the
tidewater.记号标明了潮水的高度.
★content
当读/`kntent/时(n.),意为"内容,（pl）目录；容量,含量"；当读/kn`tent/时（a.）,意为"满足的,甘愿的".

salary?你对你现在的薪水感觉满意吗?
与content发音变化有相似变化规律,而致使词义或词性不一样的词还有conduct,
contact, contract, contrast等.
★increase
当读/in`kri:s/时（v.）,意为"增长,增加,增进".当读/`inkri:s/时(n.),意为"增长,增加,增进".
The per unit area yield of ginned cotton has
increased by 15% over the last
year.皮棉单位面积产量比去年增加了百分之十五.
The technical cooperation and cultural exchanges
between the two countries are daily on the
increase.两国之间的技术合作和文化交流正与日俱增.
等等.此外还有个与“多音词”相关的题外话：有些单词加了后缀,读音就会产生改变.如advertise的名词形式加了-ment后缀,i和s 的发音都改变了,重读章节也从首音节变到了第二音节,如果还没有分辨清楚的朋友可以查阅一下词典；还有design,是“设计”,加上－ate,变成designate,表示“指定、选定”,发音却变成了/ 'dezigneit / ,等等, 很多人容易在这些单词上犯经验主义错误,所以说,背单词时,还是需要一个个的查音标,不能相当然.
