"smiling from ear to ear "means that somebody is very happy and shows his happiness on his face . he is smiling , foir he is moved and excited by something .His mouth is opened,and the happiness and excity is moving from one ear to the other ear .the mouth is just like a bridge connected an ear with the other ear ,smiling is moving from one ear to the other ear .
