Usually not for girls.Hardly heard people using it for girls.
P.S.Actually in some cases it doesn't necessarily have to be male.like "buddy system",which means that you have a partner so you two do it (whatever it is) together.
Buddy is the kind of relationship more like a brotherhood,like in "drinking buddies".if you refer your female friend as buddies,it's ok.Just give people (at least for me) the impression that you guys are boyish(not girly).
