To monitor the change in stress over ribs against the slice, two stress meters GSC1 and GSC2 were installed in two pillars in such a way that they came almost in the centre ofthe rib after splitting and slicing of the pillar (Fig.1).Monitoring was continued for 85 and 68 days with the face advance till the ribs existed.
The maximum measured change in vertical stress over GSC1 was 1.43 MPa after a period of 80 days from the date of installation (Fig.10).Appreciable change in stress was observed during splitting and slicing operation of the pillar.During
judicious extraction of the rib this value started decreasing and ultimately the stress meter was lost into the goaf.Similarly, maximum measured change in stress over GSC2 was 1.30 MPa after a period of 68 days before going into the goaf.
From the observations of stress meters used in different pillars of GDK-5A incline of SCCL,it is clear that low change in vertical stress are being generated over ribs even after slice formation.Maximum change in vertical stress observed on a rib of 2 m thick in GDK-5A incline mine at a depth of 180 m,was 1.32 MPa which is equivalent to only 30% of the in situ vertical stress. From the 3-D numerical modelling study,it was found that required support load density in the slice was always less than the slice junction and goaf edge and even sometimes less than the spilt gallery for moderate cavable roof strata.
Another point to be considered is the obviously small changes in vertical stress in the rib measured during depillaring. It is generally known that the abutment peak stress is 3-5 times the
