Pretreatment is estimated toaccount for 33% of the total cost (Tomas-Pejo et al.,2008).The current leading pretreatment methods forlignocellulosic materials are capital intensive.Economical comparison showedthat there is little differentiation between studied pretreatment methods asfor instance; low cost pretreatment reactors are counterbalanced by higher costof catalyst and/or ethanol recovery (Eggeman and Elander,2005).Development of less energy intensive andmore effective pretreatment methods allowing lower amount of enzymes loadingcan substantially decrease the total cost of cellulosic ethanol.
