Lenovo sees more market share growth
LENOVO,despite commanding more than a third of China’s competitive personal computer market,believes it can boost its market share further this year,vice chairman of Legend Holdings said yesterday.
“I think our market share in China will see further growth this year,” Liu Chuanzhi told reporters on the sidelines of an annual session of the National People’s Congress.
Liu,who founded what is now the world’s third-largest PC maker,declined to give specific forecasts but said market share for Lenovo Group Ltd.(HK:0992) would grow beyond last year’s level of around 36 percent.
It was too difficult to predict whether the firm could grow its global market share in 2006,Liu said,given that the company was still undergoing adjustments following last year’s acquisition of International Business Machines Corp.’s ailing PC business.
Lenovo Group’s share of the Chinese PC market rose to 34.5 percent in the third quarter of last year,compared with 26.3 percent in 2004 and 27 percent in 2003,according to consulting firm IDC,which compiles market share data.
The company’s global market share reached 7.2 percent in the third quarter of 2005,IDC figures show.Liu also declined to comment on sales targets for Lenovo.
Lenovo unveiled its new strategy of marketing the Lenovo brand overseas for the first time in February.
Lenovo launched its own brand of computers in the Asia Pacific region last week,signaling its intentions to grow the Lenovo name outside its home base.
The firm said the Lenovo stamped desktop and notebook computers,under the Lenovo 3000 family,will be targeted for sale to small businesses.
This will complement the company’s best-selling Thinkpad notebooks and Think Center desktops,which still bear the IBM brand and cater mainly to large companies.
