When Socrates MeetsConfucius
I believe that many people are not surewhat will happen if Socrates and Confucius met at the same time. Perhaps thereare many similarities and differences in all aspects between them. I am moreinterested in their perspective in education. Now let me use an example torepresent their educational point of view.
Socrates and Confucius were privileged toteach in the same school. One day, a student asked Confucius, " A man fellinto the water, I saved him and then his family prepare to send me a head ofcattle, should I accept it or not? " Confucius told him, "You have toaccept it, you think, you saved him, what would his family think? And then whatwould they do? "The student replied, "they'll appreciate me, wantedto repay me, and then they will give me something to express their gratitude tome. " Confucius said, "If you accept her gift of what other peoplethink? And then what would you do it? "The students add, "everyonecan see me saving rewards, recognizing the benefits of saving, it would raisethe enthusiasm of saving people, later saw people fall into the water will rushto him. " Confucius noded.
The student put the same question to askthe other teacher, Socrates. Socrates asked him, "What is your ownopinion? And why do you think so? " The student replied, "it is wrongto receive people's gift, saving is a good thing to be, but receive otherpeople's stuff is no real in my mind. " "What you say makes sense." Socrates said. It is observed that Confucius' heuristicmethod of teaching was specifically targeted at the State proposed by theprevalence of personal teaching. He opposed the teaching approach that parrotothers, does not stimulate students' teaching positive thought. He was aprominent feature in the teaching process, namely the importance for studentsto learn and think about organically, to acquire knowledge independently, todevelop cognitive abilities. And in the process of teaching, he is oftenimplemented progressively, inspired students ' thinking step by step andimproved the ability of students ' level of knowledge and awareness.
When Socrates was teaching, he likes tokeep the student made various question. The time his students unable to come upwith the correct answers to questions, he was not anxious to correct themistake, instead, he asked a question in reply contraposes these errors, atthis rate the original errors become more pronounced, put students' thoughtinto "confused " state.
