40 years ago the ideal of disabled people doing sports was n(ever） heard of.But when the annual games for the disabled were started in english in 1984 by Sir Ludwig Guttmann,the condition began to c(hange).
In 1939,Sir Ludwig Guttmann was driven to England by Nazi Germany,the B(ritish) government invited him to set up an injuries cebtre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital near London.His ideal about treating injuries included sport for the disabled.
In the first games there were o(nly) two teams of injured soldiers.The next year,1949,five teams took part in it.Since then,things have developed fast.Teams come from aboard to Stoke Mandeville every year,In 1960 the first Olympics for the disabled were held in Rome.In other years Games for the disabled are still held at Stoke Mandeville.In the 1984 wheelchair Games,1064 wheelchair athletes f(rom) about 40 countries took part in it.
The Games have been a great s(uccess).It not only promotes international friendship and understanding,but also shows that being disabled does not mean you can not enjoy s(ports).
